As some of you may know I have my own brand of Clip-in Curly Hair Extensions to allow me to always switch up my hairstyles from curly to straight. A few months ago I went to the salon to dye my natural hair all black for the Fall season but wasn't able to dye the extensions to match my new color. Instead of making another trip to the salon I have teamed up with Schwarzkopf and Walmart to show you guys how easy it is to dye your hair extensions at home. If your clip in hair extensions aren't quite the right color anymore these steps can guide you through the process.

I will be using the Schwarzkopf Color Ultime Luminous Blacks Hair Coloring Kit, 1.1 Raven Black. This coloring kit comes with all of the components to achieve a complete, step-by-step dyeing process: Tube Color Cream, Application Bottle with Developer Lotion, Tube Intense Care Elixir, A Pair Gloves and of course an Instructions Manual. It's recommended to buy a shade closest to your own hair color, but the extensions can be dyed up to two shades darker. The hair has already been through a chemical process, so bleaching or lightening the hair can affect the condition of the hair. I do not recommend lightening your hair extensions at home. You may want to get the help of a professional hair stylist to lighten your extensions or add highlights. However, I will be darkening my color which can be safely done by choosing a color that will not damage the extensions.

First thing is first, to color your hair extensions at home it's important to protect your workspace from the color which can be done by spreading aluminum foil sheets across the work area. Next, following the manufacturer's directions found in the Schwarzkopf Color Ultime Coloring Kit to prepare your color by squeezing the Tube Color Cream into the Application Bottle.

After screwing the bottle top back on to the Application Bottle you are going to shake it vigorously until all the components are thoroughly mixed and application has turned into a smooth cream. The Schwarzkopf Color Ultime Hair Coloring Kit includes 2.0 fl oz of color, more color may be necessary for longer extensions. It is always better to use too much color, rather than not enough.

Lay the extensions across the aluminum foil. It is not necessary to wash your extensions prior to coloring, so make sure the hair is dry because you don't want to add color to your hair extensions while they are wet or damp. Now it's time to apply the coloration mixture directly from the Application Bottle using gloved hands starting from the top of the extensions working your way downward. If you were to apply he color the opposite direction it may cause frizziness and damage the texture of the extensions. You can also use a color brush to help spread the color mixture to completely saturate each section of your curly hair extensions. Be sure that the color completely coats both sides of your extensions from top to the very ends.

Ensure that all the hair is evenly covered and then allow the coloration mixture to set for 20 to 40 minutes. Check a small section of the hair extensions every 5 to 10 minutes during the processing time, by gently rubbing the color off the extension with a paper towel. Be sure to reapply the color with your color brush and/or application bottle after checking. At the end of the processing time, apply warm water to the hair extensions and rinse out thoroughly until water runs clear. Afterwards apply the Schwarzkopf Intense Care Elixir and let set for about 5 minutes before rinsing to leave your hair softer and shinier. Lay the extensions out on a towel and allow them to air-dry thoroughly before using them.

  3. It's one thing to die your own hair. I have had some fun experiences doing that before. But to attempt to die extensions, I can only imagine. Looks like you did an amazing job though.

  9. Very nice. It takes a lot of work to keep extensions from knotting up, so you must be very talented.

  21. Since human hair develops at a rate of around ½" every month you can envision these wigs will be more costly than those commonly made of manufactured filaments.
