When it comes to traveling I am not really sure what it means to pack light. I have one luggage for my clothes and shoes and then a full duffle bag filled with hair products and tools. It's not easy dealing with curly hair as I can't always just get up and go. I will be the first to tell you that caring for your curly hair when traveling can be a challenge. The Secret Behind My Big Curly Hair

What I love about having curly hair is that I can style it in many ways from curly, straight, or even wavy. The style that seems to get the most attention and compliments is the big curly hair. But as India Arie says "I am not my hair." For some of you that don't know I am actually still in the transition process (well kinda sorta). I have put together a list of what my curly hair process takes, keep reading as I reveal a few beauty secrets. Oh and a disclaimer, by no means am I curly hair perfectionist, I am still learning the do's and don'ts myself.

Washing your curly hair. While some say co-washing is best for curly hair, there are still days that there is build-up and shampooing will be necessary. Make sure your shampoo does not contain any harsh chemicals and is sulfate-free.

Condition your curly hair. Moisture is key to healthy curly hair. Try making some home made treatments or those organic conditioners that you can find at specialty store such as Sally's Beauty Supply. Let the conditioner sit in your hair for 15-30 minutes to allow your curls to absorb the extra moisture.

Leave-in Conditioner. After detangling your hair with a wide-tooth comb you should apply a light leave-in conditioner to your wet hair. This will hydrate your hair as well as improve softness and elasticity.

Apply Styling Lotion. When it comes to styling, I absolutely love Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls Styling Lotion. Although that particular styling lotion is a bit pricey (but def worth every penny) a girl is going to go broke just buying hair products. So I opt for SheaMoisture Shea Butter infused with Coconut & Hibiscus. Don't add too much product at the top of your head since you want volume and don't want to weigh your hair down.

Air Dry The Hair. If I have time I prefer to air dry my hair after applying products, sleep it out, and then wake up to big hair the next day. However, when I am short on time I bring out the diffuser. If you choose to diffuse, put the blow dryer on a cool setting, flip your hair upside down and start adding air to your hair. (hey that rhymed.. well of course it did, silly me).

Defining your curls. Like I mentioned before, my hair is still in a transition phase. Meaning the texture from roots to tips goes from curly, wavy to straight. Small curly rollers or a small curling wand help to enhance your curl definition. If you are doing the no-heat strike then curly perm rods or the spiral curlers will be your best option.

How to add volume to curly hair. So here it is, my biggest curly hair secret... Although my hair already has natural volume, you should already know, the bigger the hair the better life is (Who says that? I do, that's who!) Step 1: Don't mind the lion mane, I used a wide tooth comb on clean and dry curly hair, to comb out my hair to get rid of any knots. Plus it will make it easier for the new curl pattern to form. By the way, for that extra volume I use BellaKurls clip-in curly hair extensions.

Step 2: To slightly dampen my hair I used Beautiful Curls, Shea Butter Curl Reviving Tonic which is best described as a curly hair mist.

Step 3: Then I section my hair into 1 inch sections and apply GK Hair CurlsDefineHer Curl Defining Cream to help do exactly what the name says, define the curl. I love it because it doesn't weigh down my hair, doesn't feel dry or too moist, and smells amazing.

Step 4: I have a big head so I used quite a few sets of flexi rods (don't judge). To make sure the curls hold and don't just fall flat I used Extra Hold Hair Spray by Dove. You can either sleep, nap, read a book, whatever you please while you let your hair air dry with the flexi rods.

Step 5: Take off one flexi rod to make sure the hair is completely dry. If it's still a bit damp, leave them on for more time. When they are finally dry, I really doubt you want the fresh Shirley Temple curls so I suggest you carefully separate each curl section while also applying Soft & Beautiful Botanicals Ultra Nourishing Oil Treatment with Olive Oil for that healthy shine.

Step 6: I like to finish off by shaking my hands through my hair to give that extra umph in the roots, because you know the bigger the hair the closer to God. "Congratulations on embracing your curly hair!" says Miko Branch, a professional hairstylist and co-founder of Miss Jessie's, a line of hair care products for curly hair. With the right products and a few simple styling tips, transforming your out-of-control curls into enviable, out-of-this-world curls is easier than you might think. Here's the secret: moisture, moisture, moisture!" she reveals.



"First off, you should know that curly hair tends to be dry, so when caring for your curls you will need to moisturize whenever you can. You should use a non-sulfate shampoo, like Miss Jessie's Creme de la Curl because sulfates strip hair of its natural oils. Next, you will need to deep condition your curls; I love Miss Jessie's Super Sweetback deep conditioner. Generously apply Super Sweetback to your wet curls and use your fingers to rake it through your hair. Then graduate to a paddle brush and gently detangle your curls while Super Sweetback is still in your hair. Continue the deep conditioning process by putting a plastic cap over your wet curls and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. It's not always pretty, but it really works! For best results, use an overhead dryer to intensify the deep conditioning treatment," she advises.



"Now, rinse Super Sweetback out your curls and squeeze out all of the excess water. If towel-drying your curls, remember to blot your curls—never rub. Rubbing causes friction, and friction causes frizz, and frizz causes frustration! If you just don't have time for the complete deep conditioning process, then Super Sweetback works well as a daily conditioner," says Branch. "After you're all washed up and deep conditioned, you will need to use a styling product, like Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue, that will add more moisture to your curls. Simply apply Curly Meringue to your wet curls, rake it through, and then scrunch your curls and finger-style them. Remember, you do NOT want to comb out your curls! Curly Meringue, Curly Buttercreme, Curly Pudding, and Quick Curls are all formulated to help better define your curls and fight frizz. If your curls need less hold and more moisture, then style with Stretch Silkening Creme."



"In addition, keep in mind that using a diffuser—not a blow-dryer—will help dry your hair without disturbing your curl pattern. A diffuser is an investment that you will want to make in order to secure your curls. Also, remember not to constantly touch or play with your curls when wet, as this will create frizz," she adds. "One last tip: it is important that you find a stylist who really knows how to cut your curly hair so that it properly frames and flatters your face. This might not be as easy as it sounds, so be sure to ask around. Welcome to the Curls' Club!"

3. Rain is not your friend. Whether you blow dried it or styled it curly, rain will in no way help your hair situation.

4. People will always want to touch your hair. And they don't always ask to do so.

5. You spend most of your money buying hair products. Anti-frizz, leave-in conditioner, sulfate-free, conditioner, curl enhancer, coconut oil, oh and did I say conditioner?!

6. When people with wavy hair say they understand the struggle. B*tch, please.

7. Trying to find a hair stylist that knows how to deal with your hair. I found a Dominican hair dresser and I hope she never retires.

8. Pony tails don't always work out for us. Try smoothing out all the hair bumps and tying your hair without breaking the scrunchie. Yet for some reason we always have a hair tie on our wrist.
